Local SEO is how you appear when patients in your area search for what you treat: the map results, the near me searches, the city-plus-procedure queries. For a consultant it matters more than any national visibility, and it rests on three things: your Google Business Profile, location-specific pages, and reviews.
Patients choosing a surgeon are choosing somewhere they can actually get to. Nobody is comparing knee surgeons nationally; they are looking for the right person within reasonable reach who can see them soon. If you are invisible in local results, you are invisible to the patients who could realistically book.
What do local searches actually look like?
Ordinary language plus a place signal. Shoulder specialist near me. Private knee surgery Bristol. Hernia repair cost Bath. Google treats these differently from general searches: it shows a map with three profiles, the local pack, above most ordinary results, then favours pages with local relevance.
Two consequences follow. First, the map pack is premium visibility you cannot buy with ads or win with a beautiful website alone. Second, location needs to live in your content deliberately, because Google connects you to an area through evidence, not intuition.
These searches are also the most valuable traffic a practice can receive. Someone searching a procedure plus a city is not idly researching; they are close to acting. Small volumes, high intent, exactly the pattern worth winning.
Why is the Google Business Profile the centre of this?
Because it is what the map pack shows, and for many patients it is your first impression before your website gets a look in. Most consultants either have not claimed theirs or claimed it and abandoned it. Wrong hours, no photos, three reviews, last activity in 2023: a daily leak of local patients.
A working profile has:
- Accurate details everywhere: name, address, phone, hours, exactly matching your website
- Real photos of you and your clinic, not logos and stock
- Services listed in the words patients use: procedures, conditions, not internal jargon
- Genuine reviews arriving steadily, with brief professional responses, to positive and negative alike
- Occasional updates, which signal an active practice to Google and to patients
None of this costs money. It costs attention, which is why so few consultants do it, and why the ones who do stand out so sharply.
What does location mean for your website?
Three practical things.
Say where you are, in the copy. Headings and text like Private shoulder surgery in Bristol are not inelegant; they are how patients search and how Google connects you to a place. A site that never names its city is opting out of local results.
One page per place, if you work in more than one. A consultant operating in Bristol and Bath serves two search markets; each deserves its own genuine page with real local detail, which clinic, which days, how to get there. Thin copies of the same page with the city swapped do more harm than good.
Answer local questions. Costs in your area, what happens at your specific clinics, practicalities of parking and access. This is content only a local practice can write, which is exactly why it ranks. It also feeds the general content engine described in our SEO for surgeons guide.
How do reviews decide local rankings?
Reviews are both a ranking signal and the deciding evidence for patients comparing the three profiles in the map pack. Volume matters less than pattern: genuine, recent, steadily arriving reviews beat a large stale total. Build the ask into practice routine, even-handedly and with clinical judgement about when it is appropriate, and respond briefly to what arrives.
One caution: never incentivise or cherry-pick reviews. It breaches ASA expectations, and patients can smell a curated review page in seconds.
Where should a consultant start?
In order of return:
- Claim and complete the Google Business Profile this week
- Fix name, address and phone consistency across every directory that mentions you
- Put your city in your homepage headline and your procedure page headings
- Start the review routine
- Build location pages if you practise in more than one place
The first four cost nothing but time. If you would rather see exactly where your local visibility stands first, the free audit covers it, alongside the site itself; and the broader system this fits into is our SEO service.
Frequently asked questions
I practise at a hospital. Should the profile be mine or theirs? Yours. The hospital has its own profile listing many consultants; your own profile is what appears when someone searches your name or your specialty locally, and you control it.
How long does local SEO take to work? Profile improvements can show within weeks, faster than most SEO. Location pages and reviews compound over months. It is typically the quickest visible win in the whole search programme.
Do I need local SEO if my patients travel to me? Even destination practices draw most patients from their region, and referred patients still search locally to vet you. The exception is a genuinely national niche practice, and even then the profile basics cost nothing.
What is the most common local SEO mistake you see? Inconsistency: one phone number on the website, another on the profile, an old address in a directory. Google reads mismatches as unreliability, and rankings suffer for something a spreadsheet afternoon would fix.
